David J. Barnes

Norfolk – David J. Barnes, 72, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2016, surrounded by his family at Canton Potsdam Hospital. Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. David was born in Ogdensburg on November 17, 1943, son of the late Joseph and Lula (Goodnough) Barnes. He graduated from St. Lawrence Central School in 1962 and then from Barber School in Syracuse. He operated a Barber Shop in Winthrop for several years and in 1966, he went to work at ALCOA. After 35 years of service, he retired in 2001 from the Stock Room. He served as Union Trustee for Local #420, Brick and Glass Workers. He had four children from a previous marriage, Donna, David and Tracie. He married Terry Lavigne on April 22, 1988 in Stockholm, sharing a union of love and respect for over 28 years. David was dedicated to his community; he was a coach for Tri Town Minor Hockey for many years, coaching the 1977 State Championship Team, a member of the Sons of Amvets, was a Town of Stockholm Assessor, served with the Winthrop Fire Department and was Fire Chief, then with the Brasher Winthrop Fire Department where he held a position of Fire Police. His dedication and hard work earned him the Fireman of the Year Award. He enjoyed boating, hunting, going to Las Vegas, NASCAR, driving around with his grandson at his side, his Stewart's Coffee Club and scratch-off lottery tickets. He also loved wood working and operated his business, DJ Woodworking, with his beloved wife, Terry. David is survived by his wife, Terry, his children; Donna and Thomas DiTullio of Syracuse, David and Julie Barnes of Lawrenceville, Tracie Barnes and her companion, Leonard Orlando of Massena, Chad Barnes of Winthrop, Michelle and Michael Christie of Bolton Landing and Mark and Jen Voudren of Central Square, his grandchildren; Chelcie Pellegrino, Alex DiTullio, Noah DiTullio, Aiden Barnes, Brittany Grenon, Sheri Voudren and Evan Christie. Visitation will be held at the funeral home, Sunday from 4 to 7 pm. David's Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 10 am at St. Patrick's Church in Brasher Falls, with Rev. Garry Giroux celebrating. Burial will follow in Winthrop Cemetery.
