David J. Ellis

January 1, 1947 — March 9, 2018

David Ellis, also known to his family and friends as “Davey” and “Dido”, peacefully departed on Friday, March 9, 2018, at the age of 70 surrounded by his loving family in Brasher Falls, NY.

A native of Albany, Davey was born on May 20, 1947 to the late Mary and David Ellis.  He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sharon (Bovia) Ellis; his daughter Michele Ellis-Porcaro and son-in-law Marc Porcaro; and his granddaughters Maia and Luna Porcaro.  He will be dearly missed and remembered by his sister Mary Sanford (late Thomas); sister Shirley Hicks (late James); as well as his beloved nieces, nephews and his furry best friend Ollie.

Davey attended Schuyler High School and graduated in 1965.  Serving his country during the Vietnam War, 1966-1968, as a private in the Army, he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Vietnam Service Medal.  He retired from the New York State Bridge Authority (Rip Van Winkle Bridge, Catskill) in 2002.

Fifteen years ago, Dido relocated to the North Country to devote his golden years to nurture his granddaughters whom he adored.  Their number one fan at sporting events, concerts and plays, Dido would share his thoughts with the local editors praising the school teachers and all the children for the memorable performances. An avid writer, he was often published in newspapers with compassion for humanity and animal rights. Quite the storyteller, his powerful voice would recount his days as a young boy and teenager living in the south end of Albany.

Davey was a huge fan of all sports and he had a particular fondness for the Baltimore Orioles. As a music aficionado, the soundtrack to his life was filled with sweet melodies that he instilled in his daughter and granddaughters. Davey was the champion of name that tune and could let you know the title, artist and year recorded with just a few lyrics. His spirit will live on and we will remember him whistling and humming familiar Motown classics, especially My Girl by The Temptations.  “I got sunshine on a cloudy day....”

There are no planned services at this time.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Davey’s name to A Little Bit of Heaven (horse rehabilitation sanctuary) www.alittlebitofheaveninc.org  35 Hallahan Rd, North Lawrence, NY 12967 (315) 276-5415

As Dave would often say, “Peace”.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop, where you can share a memory or a condolence with Davey’s family at www.hammillfh.com.
