Dorothy V. Latrace

Massena- Dorothy V. (Cootware) LaTrace, 98 passed away Friday April 6, 2018 at Massena Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.

Dorothy was born in Grand Isle, VT on May 10, 1919 to the late Ernst Cootware and Etta Mae Dubuque. She graduated from District #16 Brasher-Stockholm School. Dorothy married Kyle LaTrace on December 19, 1934 At St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls with Fr. Crowley officiating, attended by Pearl and George Green. Kyle passed away on November 16, 1985.

She attended St. Mary’s Church in Massena and St. Lucia’s Catholic Church in Florida.

Dorothy worked as a waitress in Massena; later as a machine operator for Lamson Corp in Syracuse; inspector and electronic repairing for General Dynamics in Rochester; machine operator and tow motor operator at Strongberg Carlsone; and lastly, she worked for 7 years as a District Sales Manager for Gannett Newspapers in Rochester; the position from which she retired and was very proud of.

Fully embracing her skill, Dorothy was a self-taught artist, best known for her paintings.

She was a member of the Massena AMVET’s Auxiliary, Massena Art Gallery, Italian American Art Club, Stockholm Historical Organization, Spanish Lakes Shuffleboard, and Golf and Art Clubs at Pt. St. Lucia, Florida.

She is survived by: her daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Donald Durant of Massena, and her son Gary LaTrace of Virginia Beach; 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and a great grandson; her sister Emily Bushway of Burlington; 2 daughters-in-law Barbara LaTrace of Massena, Barbara Swamp of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents and husband, always close to her heart was the memory of those who predeceased her: 2 sons: Ronald LaTrace and Arthur Swamp, Jr.; sisters: Joyce Pecore, and Elizabeth Monroe; brothers, Edward and Henry Cootware; two children in infancy: William and Bonita; a great grandson Benjamin Durant; and a dear friend and companion Michael Bronchetti.

In keeping with Dorothy’s wishes there will be no services at this time. Her family will have a Celebration of Dorothy’s life at their convenience.
