Winthrop - Bernard R. Thompson, 69, passed away Sept. 9, 2010 at Massena Memorial Hospital with the love and support of his family. Bernard was born on October 7, 1940 in Stockholm, son of the late Theodore C. and Mary Genevieve (Phelix) Thompson. He graduated from St. Lawrence Central School. He served his country in the U. S. Army. While stationed in New Mexico, he married Rachel Madison in Albuquerque, on June 1, 1963. They shared a loving relationship for 47 years. Bernard graduated from NYS Ranger School in Wanakena in Feb. 1966 with an Associates in Applied Science in Land Surveying Technology.
He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 545D, working as Party Chief, from Burlington, VT, throughout NY state; Potsdam, Gouverneur, Fitzpatrick Nuclear Plant, ALCOA, 765 KV power line construction, Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station #2, Malone Prison, Fort Drum, Corning Glass, Tupper Lake, Marcy, Reading, PA and out to Cedar Rapids, IA. He retired in 1994, after 28 years of dedicated service.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #514 in Winthrop, a life member of the Ranger School Alumni in Wanakena, and a past member of the Brasher Winthrop Fire Dept.
He is survived by his wife, Rachel; four children, Edward Thompson of Rockville, MD, Jeannette and Lee Archambault of Croydon, NH, Debbie Thompson-Crump and her companion, Jamie Sharpe of Waddington and Leigh and Scott Arquiett of Newport, NH; 11 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; two brothers, James and Rayona Thompson and Leland and Anna Thompson, both of Winthrop and two sisters, Mary Ezyk of Massena and Margaret Gauthier of Brasher Falls. Two brothers, Deland and William and one sister, Helen Brown, predeceased him.
Friends may call at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop, Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday morning at 10 am at St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls, burial will follow at the parish cemetery.
