Dickinson Center- Mrs. Betty R. Wood, 90, peacefully passed away on Thursday November 14, 2019 at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh comforted by her family at her side.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in St. Regis Falls, where calling hours will be held Sunday from 3 – 6 pm. Betty’s Funeral Service will be celebrated at the Dickinson Center Baptist Church on Monday November 18th at 11:00 AM with Pastor Donald Work and, Betty’s grandson, Associate Pastor Jacob Wood. Private burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Dickinson. Family and friends are welcome to join in a luncheon following Betty’s funeral at the Dickinson Center Baptist Church.
Betty was born at home in Dickinson Center on June 4, 1929 to the late Laurence and DeEtta (McCallum) Marsh. She attended Dickinson Center School and graduated from St. Regis Falls High School in 1948.
Later that year, on September 29th, she was married to Meredith Wood at the Dickinson Center Methodist Church by the Reverend Charles Smith. They shared in a blessed union built upon faith for 56 dedicated years until Meredith passed away on December 30, 2004.
Betty lived all her life in Dickinson Center where she lovingly raised her family while becoming a master baker, crafter, gardener, floral arranger, and fixer of all things broken.
Dedicating her time to several organizations, Betty was an active and influential member of her community. She served on the Town of Dickinson and School Election Boards for many years, was the President of the Missionary Society at the Dickinson Center Baptist Church where she also served as Church Clerk and taught Sunday school, volunteered at the St. Regis Falls Head start for several years, and served as the Town Historian.
Her most favorite role was loving caregiver and supporter of family and friends.
Betty is survived by her son, Laurence Wood and his wife Jeannie of Dickinson Center, daughter Diane Leslie and her fiancé Phil Ashley of Massena, daughter Cynthia Wood of Plattsburgh; 6 grandchildren: Nicole (Travis) Gillis, Tyler Leslie, Jacob (Brianah) Wood, Ian (Abby) Wood, Debbie Leslie, Trevor Cronce; great- granddaughter Rigby James Gillis; brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Fran Marsh of Blounts Creek, NC.; sisters: Nancy Greguire, and Darlene (John) Langdon, both of Dickinson Center; and several nieces and nephews.
Always close to her heart is the memory of those who predeceased her. Besides her husband were brothers, L. John (Gloria) Marsh, Keith (Irene) Marsh and brother-in-law, Art Greguire.
