Brasher Falls - Mrs. Catherine H. Compeau, 97, passed away Thursday morning, August 1, 2024, at Canton Potsdam Hospital. Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home and in keeping with Kate's wishes there will be no calling hours. Kate's graveside service will be held on Friday,
August 9th at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Cemetery in Brasher Falls.
Catherine was born on March 27, 1927, in Stockholm, daughter of the late John M. and Pearl A. (Cummings) Hourihan. Due to the fire at Brasher Stockholm High School, Kate graduated from North Lawrence High School. On December 26, 1945, Kate married Paul B. Compeau, and they began their life together raising a family. They were married 75 years until Paul's passing on July 23, 2021.Kate and Paul were founders and owners of Massena Chrysler - Plymouth, Inc., C & M Ford Inc., and Compeau Realty Corp. Inc., Massena until their retirement in 1988. They also were instrumental in developing the new football field at the present location at St. Lawrence Central School by donating all fill material for the field. Kate was a member of the American Legion Post #514 in Winthrop, VFW Post #1143 Auxiliary in Massena and a past member of Moose Lodge Auxiliary, Pine Island, FL.
She is survived by her children, Phillip Paul Compeau and his wife Kathleen of Watertown, Michael James and his wife Penny of Occoquan, VA., Fred William Compeau of Moira, and Joan Marie Compeau of Brasher Falls; grandchildren, Chris (Sarah) Compeau, Kelly (Katie) Compeau, and Jason Ashley (Jennifer Murphy); 9 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Kate was predeceased by her daughter Ann on April 25, 1959; grandsons, Anthony Ashley and Ben Niles Compeau; great-grandson, Trevor Ashley; her brothers, Jerry, Ralph, James, Maurice and Michael Hourihan, her sisters, Elizabeth Compeau and Theresa Gravlin.
