Winthrop – Mr. Darrel L. Shatraw passed away on December 5, 2024, at the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburg with his family by his side.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop where calling hours will be held Monday December 9th from 4 – 6 PM. A graveside service with military honors will take place Tuesday December 10th at 11:00am at Union Cemetery in Buckton.
Darrel was born in Dickinson Center on October 7, 1931, to the late Francis and Elenore (Holmes) Shatraw. He attended school at the Buckton School house and Stockholm School house (Quonset Hut) in Winthrop.
Darrel proudly served in the United States Army for 20 years, enlisting in New York around August 3, 1950, during a tumultuous time in history. Stationed in Germany, he honorably fought in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, where his bravery earned him the Bronze Star Medal, among numerous other commendations, reflecting his commitment and courage. He retired with the rank of E-7, leaving behind a legacy of service that inspired all who knew him.
He married Rosa Frisch in Bamberg, Germany on March 10, 1956. They shared 56 years together until Rosa’s passing on May 30, 2012. Upon returning to civilian life, Darrel worked as an electrician in Colorado and then when he moved back to New York he found his calling as a truck driver. Locally he drove truck for Clark Phippen and then for Green Island Construction in Albany, NY, the position from which he retired.
Known for his unwavering work ethic, he always had a project underway, showcasing his talent and passion for carpentry. He always enjoyed watching his country westerns and in his early years Darrel found joyful moments spent hunting and fishing.
Darrel leaves behind cherished memories that will be carried forward by his son, Steven Shatraw of Winthrop and his daughter, Margie Tovis of Colorado Springs; his grandchildren, Kayla and Terrance Barber, Marcus Shatraw, Matthew Shatraw, Kassandra Shatraw, Tanner Barber, Dawson Shatraw, Julie Rowland, Leilani Martinez, and Gina Toves; great grandchildren, Arianna Barber, Cayden Barber, Alayna Shatraw, Nevaeh Shatraw, Marcus Shatraw Jr., Brayson Shatraw, Ariyah Shatraw, and Hayden Shatraw.
In this time of sorrow, we remember Darrel L. Shatraw not just for the years he lived but for his service, hard work and all the lives he touched. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
