Doris Jane Thompson

Winthrop – Doris J. "Dody" Thompson, 80, passed away peacefully at her home on July 23, 2014, surrounded by the love of her family and Hospice. Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Doris was born on April 13, 1934 in Potsdam the daughter of the late Edward and Irene (Laton) Burkum. She graduated from Potsdam High School while working at Fishman's 5¢ & 10¢ Store. On July 3, 1953, she married Carl R. Thompson at the Norfolk U. M. Church, a blessed union of 61 years of true companionship. For many years, Doris worked at Kinney Drugs in Potsdam; on the soda fountain and as a clerk. She liked to keep busy; quilting, knitting, crossword puzzles, serving on the Board of Elections and doing Jury Duty. The most important aspect of her life was caring for her family, her home and her camp (Camp Dody). Doris was generous and compassionate to all she met and was known to say, "What goes around comes around." Doris is survived by her husband, Carl; four sons, Richard and Tammy Thompson of Watertown, Randy and Audrey Thompson of Victor, Russell and Josee Thompson of Chazy and Bruce and Kim Thompson of Potsdam; her siblings, George Burkum of Potsdam, Bernice and Francis Wolf of Norfolk, Shirley and Billy Irwin of Plattsburgh, Joan and Stanley Jock of Bombay and Velma and George Thompson of Winthrop; one sister in law, Pauline Burkum of Potsdam; her grandchildren, Jill Thompson of Watertown, Sara and James Vincent of Watertown, Brandon and Jen Thompson of Winthrop, Tracey Baker of Norfolk, Courtney and Brad DiLeo of Rochester, Chelsey Thompson of Farmington, Russell Thompson of FL, Valerie and Corey Roos of Rochester, Tiffany and Jeff Miller of CA, Meagan and Shawn Biter of NH, Roxanne J. Auger Thompson of Chazy, Troy and Mindy Thompson of Potsdam, Lacey Thompson of Massena, Christopher and Liz McGrath of Norwood, Justin and Brandy McGrath of Potsdam, Patrick McGrath of Potsdam and Devin and Mandy Chambers of Winthrop; 37 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two grandchildren, Chaunacey Stacey and Cassandra Thompson; one brother, Francis Burkum and two sisters, Mae Reynolds and Rose Brown. Following Doris' wishes there will be no public calling hours. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 11am at St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls with Fr. Garry Giroux celebrating. Following the mass, she will be interred in Southville Cemetery in Stockholm.
