In the words of an angel, "What will be, will be". And it was so. On February 20th, 2025, surrounded by her devoted family, the Lord "pulled her card" (as she would say), and Edna Ruth (Martin) Fye was led home.
Born on October 16, 1948, to Angus and Bertha (LaVare) Martin, Edna was the youngest girl of 13 children; Gerald, Lyle, Gordon, Melbourne, Wilda, Angus Jr., Rhoda (Gokey), Howard, Betty (French), Mark, Odena (Genaway) and Earl.
Edna married Malcolm Fye Jr., in 1965 and together they raised 5 loving children: Tammy (Jay) Daggett, Karen (Randy) Cox, Patsy (Rick) LaVoy, Malcolm (Eva) Fye, III and Ruthie (John) Lamb, all of Dickinson Center.
Ma never measured life in terms of material things nor ever put herself first. She loved the simple life and family! Her heart was pure gold, and it was through her beautiful giving heart, her smile and her constant sense of humor that she blessed this earth and all who entered her home.
Ma displayed her love to family and friends through her cooking, always asking as you entered, "are you hungry" and would quickly fix a delicious meal in minutes. Along with her signature fried chicken, her homemade donuts and breads were absolutely scrumptious! Ma would state, "I made raised donuts today, you'd better come get some before they're all gone!" It gave her great satisfaction to be able to feed a hungry belly.
Her grandchildren fondly remember getting off the bus after school at Gram's house, often to the smell of that special fried chicken (or anything their hearts desired for that matter). Like a second Mother, she fed them, patiently assisted them with homework and talked with them about their day. To the grandchildren, Gram, Grammie, Grandma would always say, next time you come, we will "open a can of worms" meaning we will get into mischief, and they did! Blessed was Ma to have had 10 grandchildren as well as 16 great-grandchildren with another on the way. They were the apple of her eye and always held a special place in her heart. Her grandchildren include: Alyssa (Johnny) Psomos, Tyler (Keirstan) Daggett, Kyle (Noelle Fefee) Cox, Jeremy (Jamie) Cox, Holly Cox, Addison LaVoy, Malcolm (Britt) Fye IV, Hayley (Mike Ellis) Fye, Kaitlin (Robbie) Brady, and Brayden (Dalys) Fye.
Ma never ever complained, despite her laborious lifestyle and tireless time spent canning and freezing her garden bounties, doing the farm chores, and helping in the logging business (often splitting wood with a hand splitting mall). She always said she was "rough, tough and hard to bluff," and she was! Her work ethic gave her pleasure and would've put many a man to shame. After raising her children, Ma proudly worked for the DC Mini Mart and took great enjoyment in working there.
At Ma's the coffeepot was always on, and we were welcomed with her warm heart. To her children she offered a listening ear and non-judgmental advice. Until the very day the Lord called her home, she kept us in stitches by reciting her hilarious "ditty rhymes" from days gone by. Her mischievous antics and horseplay were a constant occurrence, and she opened a can of whoop-ass on us often with a friendly game of Rummy. We shall always cherish her goodbye waves from the kitchen window each and every time we left the farm.
Edna Ruth (Martin) Fye is survived by her children, her devoted friend and sister, Odena Genaway, her brother, Earl "Buzzy" Martin, sisters-in law Sadie Martin and Linda Fye and many nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, Edna was pre-deceased by her husband, Malcolm Fye Jr. and 11 of her siblings.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in St. Regis Falls. At the family's wishes, there will be no public viewing hours or funeral service. A private family service/spring burial is planned where Edna will be laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery, Dickinson Center.
Donation suggestions: Hospice of the North Country, Dickinson Center Fire Department or the St. Regis Falls Rescue Squad.
Great appreciation is extended to Dr. Anjni Bhagat, Hospice of the North Country, her very special compassionate evening companion and Guardian Angel, Jen. O'Connell and wonderful caregivers: Cayla Richards, Heather Robinson, Nikki Jock, Tammy Slyman, Hailey Perry.
As Ma walks in the beautiful gardens of Heaven she now freely inhales everlasting life.
