Brasher Falls – Inez M. Hutchins, 100, passed away at her home Saturday morning, October 21, 2017, with her family at her side. Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Inez was born on May 6, 1917 in Norfolk, daughter of the late Frederick G. and Zella (Lewis) Carson. She married Bernard Hutchins on August 10, 1935, together they operated a dairy farm and she ran the restaurant and bar at LaVigne's in Norfolk, where she was known for her skillful cooking. Mr. Hutchins passed away at an early age on June 23, 1960. Inez had to support a family and went to college to earn her LPN. She worked for many years at Massena Hospital and Potsdam Hospital.
She was a devoted member of the Knapp's Station Community Church, a member of the Parishville Hilltoppers, a member of the SLC Fiddlers Association and the Two Steppers, and a longtime treasurer for Brookdale Cemetery Association. Always on the go, she took the time to quilt and was well known for her cakes, especially shower and wedding cakes. Inez was a true matriarch; living her life with unconditional love for her family. She was hard working, energetic woman who carried out her responsibilities and kept busy, a lifestyle that kept her alive and well. She had a great regard for family life and was always aware of the wellbeing of her loved ones.
Inez is survived by her children; Doris Kelly of Winthrop, Joan and Martin Coolidge of Clayton, NC, Irene Royce of Newport, NC, 12 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She always held close to her heart the memories of her deceased children, Lois Hutchins who died in infancy, James B. Hutchins who died on September 25, 1954 and Douglas Hutchins who died on February 9, 2012. Two brothers, Gerald Carson and Donald Carson, one sister, Shirley Carson LaVigne and her companion of 35 years, Robert A. Deleel, all predeceased her.
Visitation will be held Saturday, October 28, 2017 from 11 – 12:30 with her funeral service to follow at 1 pm at the Hammill Funeral Home. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery in Stockholm.
