Massena - Jannett A. Curtis, 91, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 26, 2010 at the St. Regis Nursing Home in Massena. Jannett was born on July 28, 1918 in Stockholm, daughter of the late Peter and Edna Hutchinson Chatell and graduated from Potsdam High School. On September 1, 1940, she married Elmer Seth Curtis at the United Methodist Church in Knapps Station with Rev. Clarence Stearns, Jr. officiating. They shared a loving relationship for 53 years. Mr. Curtis passed away on March 20, 1994.
Jannett worked at St. Lawrence Central School as a Cook for 18 years and actively participated in many organizations; Brasher Falls U.M.C. (Sunday School Teacher, Methodist Youth Fellowship, Christian Women's Group), Tri Town Senior Citizens - President, St. Lawrence County - Council of Senior Citizens (President and Secretary), LBSH Housing Board Member and Nutrition Site Liaison, St. Lawrence County Office for the Aging Advisory Council (Secretary), Home Bureau - Officer and member of county and state, 4-H Leader in the Brasher/Winthrop area, Winthrop Grange member- Lecturer and Juvenile Matron, Adult Education Teacher-St. Lawrence Central School, Tri Town Chamber of Commerce member, Boy Scout Den Mother, member of the Historical Society for the Towns of Stockholm and Brasher, and a member of TAUNY, Canton. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, needlepoint, weaving, shirret rug and all types of crafts.
She is survived by four sons, Colin E. Curtis of Florence, KY, Charles S. Curtis of Brasher Falls, Carroll P. Curtis of Massena and Clinton B. Curtis of Massena, one daughter, Constance C. Denney of Madrid; two sisters, Louise Pierce of Norwood and Vera LaBarge of Massena; one brother, Bernard Chatell of Little River, SC, 12 Grandchildren; 13 Great Grandchildren; 2 Great Great Grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; 28 foster children; 16 fresh air children. Two sisters, Ruth Chatell and Olive Moulton, predeceased her.
Her family will receive friends at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop, Monday from 6 to 8 and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 am at the Brasher Falls United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Brasher Falls.
In lieu of flowers, she has requested that donations be made to the Brasher Falls U. M. Church or Tri Town Rescue Squad.
