St. Regis Falls- Mr. Max D. Sawyer Sr. 75 passed away unexpectedly Monday April 1, 2013 at the Alice Hyde Medical Center with the love and support of his family. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in St. Regis Falls. Max was born in Pyrites on June 15, 1937 to the late Stanley and Della (Vert) Sawyer. He attended school till about the 8th grade, and shortly after which he was enlisted in the United States Navy. Max proudly served his country from 1954 till 1958 entering into inactive duty until 1962. On March 31, 1962 Max married his soul-mate, Eula Chesbrough at the United Methodist Church in St. Regis Falls. They shared a unique and special union, just celebrating their 51st wedding anniversary this past Sunday. The two lived in Niagara Falls, and while there Max worked construction on the Power Project. After moving back to the North Country, Max was employed at ALCOA; contributing 27 years and retiring in 2001. Max truly enjoyed life, living every day to the fullest. His family and friends were often infected with his outgoing personality and spirit; which would always lead to a good time and he surely wasn't afraid of poking fun. Max's grandchildren were the joys of his life, cherishing all time spent with each of them. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife; Eula, his sons; Max D. Sawyer Jr. of St. Regis Falls and Cameron Sawyer of St. Regis falls currently serving in the US Air Force, his grandchildren; Alexis Sawyer and her mother Julie Smithers of Heuvelton, Cale, Koryn, Liana, and Loghan Sawyer of Boston MA., 3 sisters; Lola Gilmore of Elmira, Nancy Breeden, and Linda Carlson both of Cheyenne, WY., 3 brothers, Wally Sawyer of Chicago IL., Terrance "Terry" Sawyer, and Jack Sawyer both of Cheyenne WY., and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Max was predeceased by, 2 grandsons in infancy; Lucus and Ian Sawyer and his sister, Shirley Barthalaw. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-6 at the funeral home. Max's Funeral Service and Celebration of Life will commence upon conclusion of visitation at 6pm with Pastor Lee Sweeney officiating.
