Merle E. Shattuck

Massena - Mrs. Merle E. Shattuck, 97, passed away Monday evening, Nov. 15, 2010. She was born on September 26, 1913 in the Town of Stockholm, daughter of the late, Oscar A. and Jessie M. (Wells) Holmes. In 1931, she graduated from Brasher-Stockholm High School and went on to earn her Teaching Degree from Potsdam Normal. Merle taught at rural schools in Piketown, Jenkins Neighborhood and at the Cedar Schoolhouse on the Potsdam Road. On October 14, 1940, she married Harold F. Shattuck in Winthrop. Mr. Shattuck passed away on March 6, 2000. Mrs. Shattuck is survived by her nephew, Tim and Joan Parr of Maryland, two grandnieces, Ellen and Elizabeth Parr and her good friend, with whom she stayed during her time with Hospice, Connie Sleister of Massena. She was predeceased by her sister, Olive Parr and two brothers, Mark Holmes, who died at nine months of age and Garth Holmes, who gave his life for our freedom during World War II, in Italy in November of 1943. A funeral service will be Thursday at 11 am at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Visitation will be from 10 am until the service. Burial will be in Winthrop Cemetery.
