Brasher Falls- Mr. Richard “Rick” C. Shampine, 54, passed away peacefully, Monday January 6, 2014 at the Canton- Potsdam Hospital, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Rick was born in Potsdam on June 4, 1959 to the late Walter C. and Lois (Hoxie) Shampine. He was raised and educated locally, graduating from St. Lawrence Central High School in 1977.
He was a Licensed Master Stone Mason, and worked over 30 years in construction for many different companies, mainly being self-employed. He belonged to the Bricklayers & Allied Craft workers Union #2 out of Watertown.
On June 6, 1998 he was married to Catherine Caza-Smith at the Massena town hall by Judge Crandall. Rick and Cathy shared a union of 15 years filled with many good times, lots of love, and plenty of laughter.
Rick was a people person who loved to entertain and make people laugh. His love for music often brought family and friends together as he was very talented in playing several different musical instruments: piano, drums, guitar, banjo and even the flute. You would often find him listening to classic vinyl rock or his favorite, Elvis.
Rick enjoyed fishing, especially with his son, Kyle; most often walking the river to find the right spot or just spending time together, enjoying the outdoors and good company.
He took much pleasure in gardening. This was clearly evident; Rick had a monstrous garden and shared with all his family and friends. He even took time to design his own unique cart for picking beans.
Rick had a quick wit paired with a great sense of humor so he really enjoyed getting into a good banter. He was a good friend to all he met, and will be greatly missed.
He was a member of the Massena AMVETS Post 4.
He is survived by: his wife, Catherine, his son, Kyle Shampine of Brasher Falls, his step-children, Joel Smith of Massena, Nicholas Smith of Texas, and Shannon Smith of Jersey City, NJ., 3 brothers, Herbert “Jimmy” Shampine of Las Vegas, Steve and Michelle Shampine of TN., Robert and Pam Shampine of FL., and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation will be Friday (January 10) from 1-4 and 6-7 at the funeral home. Rick’s Funeral Service and Celebration of Life will commence upon conclusion of visitation at 7pm Friday evening, with Rev. Garry Giroux officiating.
For those wishing to express an act of kindness, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Massena AMVETS Post 4 in Rick’s honor.
