Sandra Ellen Heister "Sandy" 83, died at her home in San Francisco surrounded by family on Sunday, December 11, 2022. She was born in Potsdam, NY on November 25, 1939, the youngest daughter of Robert and Beatrice Heister (Grow) of Winthrop, NY. Sandy graduated from St. Lawrence Central High School and Le Moyne College. She moved to San Francisco upon graduation. In 1964 she started her career as a Murry School District (Dublin Unified School District) teacher. She soon became a reading specialist and spent the rest of her career in that role at Frederiksen, Fallon and Murray Elementary Schools. She worked with individuals and small groups of students, as well as teachers in their classrooms and in collaboration with other professional specialists until her retirement in 2005. She was liked and respected by the teaching staff and parents and effective in implementing a variety of learning-to-read techniques. Sandy was loved by all who knew her. She had a wonderful sense of humor and found great joy in life. Sandy was passionate about travel, walking, cycling, politics, sports, and her family. She made everyone feel special. Sandy also loved to read and shared her love of reading with her students, friends, and family. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her sisters, Sheila Landau and Elsa Zion, brother, Robert Heister and niece, Libby Zion. Surviving is her sister, Martha Brattain of Miami, Florida, her brother, Karl Heister of Portland, Maine and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on June3rd at 11 am at St. Patrick Cemetery in Brasher Falls. A luncheon celebrating her life will follow at 12 pm at the Riverview Restaurant, 928 State Highway 11C, Brasher Fallls, NY 13613.
