Sue Marie Kowalchuk Whitmarsh, 69, formerly of Brasher Falls, NY, died with her loving sister, Mary, and brother, Peter by her side at Wilson Medical Center, Johnson City, NY on Friday September 6, 2024, following a long illness.
Sue was born on November 21, 1954, in Massena, NY, to Michael and Florence (Marie) Kowalchuk. She graduated from Holy Family High School in Massena and from Canton ATC.
After graduating, Sue began her employment career as the Head Dietician at Moongate Nursing Home in Canton, NY. She would later work as Dietician and Phlebotomist at hospitals in the Oneonta area. Sue was the Dialysis Patient Care Technician at Bassett Healthcare Network until an on-the-job injury led to her retirement.
Sue enjoyed singing. While growing up, she would often be called upon to sing at funerals and was one of the lead guitarists in St. Patrick's folk group in Brasher Falls, NY. While working her various jobs, she would often sing "Happy Birthday," much to the pleasure of many patients she served. Sue was a great seamstress, making many of her own clothes and those of various family members. She also enjoyed knitting and often gifted parents with a homemade afghan for their newborn. Sue's many years in the food service industry contributed to her love of baking.
Sue is survived by her siblings, Peter Kowalchuk and his wife, Karen, of Aurora, CO; Mary Kowalchuk of Unadilla, NY; Kristina Kowalchuk of Potsdam, NY; Daniel Kowalchuk and his wife, Marijude, of Downingtown, PA; Timothy and his wife, Linda, of Montoursville, PA; and a sister-in-law, Joan Moore. Sue also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents and her oldest brother, Patrick.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop, NY where visiting hours will be held on Friday, November 8th from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon. Burial will follow immediately after at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Brasher Falls, NY.
