Canton – Ms. Susan Kay Newtown, 48, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2014 at the Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Susan was born in Massena, October 18, 1965 to the late Levi F. and Marion F. (Reed) Newtown. She graduated from St. Lawrence Central in 1984 where she received the NAC All Northern MVP for Soccer-Defense, traveled to London and Scotland under a Student’s Abroad Scholarship and is well remembered for her leading roles in “Carousel”, “Gypsy Rose Lee”, and “Funny Girl.” During this time, she was a communicant and choir member of St. Patrick’s Church, Hogansburg. She received an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science from Jefferson Community College in 1993 with a concentration in paralegal studies and was inducted into the Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society in1997, while pursuing a Bachelors in Political Science at SUNY Potsdam. After working for a Florida based land management company and as a paralegal in Syracuse, Susan returned to the field she loved as a restaurateur working in all aspects of the hospitality service industry at resorts and restaurants including Bonnie Castle, Cavalarios, Riveredge, Cross Roads, St. Lawrence University Food Service and the Clarkson Inn. Those who loved Susan will remember her for her fierce loyalty, quick wit, bright smile, infectious laugh and beautiful singing. She loved music, jogging, nature, photography and animals. She was strong in her beliefs and loved a good debate. Always close to her heart, was the memory of her father, Levi, and mother, Marion, who predeceased her. She is survived by: her life partner, Mark D. Niles of Canton; his son, Paul Niles of Tampa; her siblings, Connie J. Lambert of New Mexico; David L. and Lonny Newtown of Helena; Daniel F. and Julie Newtown of Paul Smiths; Lorraine M. and David Clement of Watertown; and many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be Saturday, January 18, 2014 from 11-1 at the funeral home. Susan’s Funeral Service and Celebration of Life will commence upon conclusion of visitation at 1:00pm with Rev. Lee Sweeney officiating. A reception will follow at the Helena Volunteer Fire Department on Rt. 37C. Burial will take place in the spring at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. In Susan’s honor, memorial contributions may be made to your local ASPCA in lieu of flowers. Memories and condolences may be shared with her family at www.hammillfh.com.
