Walter L. Farmer, former resident of St. Regis Falls, peacefully passed away in Rochester, NY on Tuesday, March 19th. A graveside service is planned for Saturday, May 18th, 10 a.m., at St. Ann's Cemetery in St. Regis Falls.
Walter was born on October 31, 1928 (standing joke was that he was the trick, not the treat) to Linden and Nettie Farmer. Walter was predeceased by his eleven siblings, and was the youngest (that's why he spoiled his youngest son).
Walter married Lorraine T. Fye, who survives him, and had three children. Lyndon (Patricia) Farmer of St. Regis Falls, Walter (Karen) Farmer of Naples, and Mel (Tawney) Farmer of Honeoye Falls all of whom survive. He was a devoted grandfather to his grandchildren (who called him Sarmer); Nathaniel (Melissa) Farmer, Jenna (Matthew) DePuccio, Connor Farmer; Colin (Jessica) Farmer, and Chloe (Joe) Flanagan; and great-grandchildren Weston and Camden; Molly and Ryann; and Callum.
Walter joined the army in 1950 and served honorably during the Korean Conflict. He was a dedicated member of the American Legion, faithfully participating in Memorial Day services until his mid-eighties, taking great pride in maintaining his military bearing. After the army he worked on the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway, then spent many years working at the Reynolds Metals Aluminum plant, from which he eventually retired.
Walter was an avid outdoorsman who shared his love of hunting, fishing, and hiking with his family. (You had to take two steps for every one of his just to keep up!) He was roller blading well into his seventies and never slowed down.
Walter touched many lives and inspired great loyalty among his friends. Art Sexton, lifelong friend of Walter, always said "If you are half the man your father is, you will be a great man." Thank you for a lifetime of love and memories.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the St. Regis Falls American Legion.
