George H. Stowell

March 22, 1928 — July 4, 2013

Brasher Iron Works - George H. Stowell, 85, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 4, 2013 in the comfort of his home under the loving care of his family and Hospice. Arrangements are entrusted with the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. George was born on March 22, 1928 in Ft. Covington, son of the late Raymond and Jessie (LaBrake) Stowell. He graduated from Massena High School and on October 8, 1948, married Rose Anderson at St. Patrick Church in Hogansburg with Mons. Funkie, celebrating the mass. They have shared a loving union over 64 years. George retired from ALCOA after 44 years of service in the Rod and Bar Mill as an Inspector. He was a member of the ALCOA 25 year club; a former member of the Helena Fire Department and a member of the Moose Lodge in Massena. He put forth his best efforts as handyman and craftsman, using his carpentry talents to build his home and help others remodel. His independent thinking provided him with the ability to complete many complicated jobs. He enjoyed leisure time snowmobiling, motorcycles and hunting with friends and family. Anytime he was surrounded by his family were precious times; adding in an honest game of cards between the girls and boys, made many fun-loving memories. Surviving George is his wife, Rose; two sons and daughters in law, Clifford and Pamela Stowell of Bedford, IN and Brian and Cathy Stowell of Brasher; two daughters-in-law, Kathy Stowell and Joyce Stowell; six grandchildren, Jennifer and Darin York, Shawn Stowell and his companion, Nicole, Jesse Rae and Nicole Stowell, Alicia and Brent Logan, Sarah and Josh Kennedy and Brian Adam Stowell.; 12 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Always close to his heart were his children that predeceased him, Denise, Craig and Richard, along with his siblings, Edward, William (Dude), Leroy and Edna. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. George's Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at 10am at St. Patrick Church in Brasher, followed by interment in the parish cemetery. Those wishing to express an act of kindness, please consider donations in George's memory to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley, Inc., 6805 US Hwy 11, Potsdam, NY 13676.
