Dickinson Center- Mrs. Irene E. Smith, 90, passed away Sunday July 27, 2014 at the Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone. Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in St. Regis Falls. Irene was born in Brushton on June 18, 1924 to the late Leon and Elizabeth (Dunn) McCullough. She was raised and educated locally, graduating from Moira High School. On September 17, 1945 Irene was united into marriage with Milton Smith in Brushton. Milton and Irene embraced life together and raised a family. They shared a blessed union of 68 years together filled with faith and love. She started her working career as an inspector; first at Bombay Slipper in the town of Bombay, and then at the Dress Factory in Malone, lastly working for Elliott’s Slipper Factory in Brushton. Those who knew and loved Irene would often find her working away in her garden. She enjoyed sewing and cooking and also was fond of animals, especially towards cats. Irene was a member of St. Ann’s Church in St. Regis Falls. Irene is survived by her husband, Milton, her children: Gary and Sandy Smith of CT., Susan and Michael Kelley of Brushton, Karen and John Tice of Saranac Lake, and Diane and Charlie Dimick of Brushton, 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter. Always close to her heart is the memory of her son Edward Smith and brother Edward McCullough whom predeceased her. In following expressed wishes, services will be held privately at the convenience of Irene’s family. For those wishing to honor Irene’s memory, memorial contributions may be made to the Tri-Lakes Human Society in Saranac Lake.
