Winthrop – Grace E. Best, 87, passed away peacefully at her daughter in law's home, Friday, August 12, 2016, surrounded by her family. Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Gracie was born on November 2, 1928 in her parents' home in Winthrop to the late Thomas and Candida (Cerro) Rufa. Her parents established the original Rufa's Restaurant, (where Dollar General is now) and she grew up in the restaurant. She graduated from Brasher Stockholm High School in 1949 and on September 10, 1949, she married Lloyd A. Best at St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls. They shared a special union of love and mutual respect until his passing on September 5, 2012.
Gracie enjoyed family get-togethers, making her homemade spaghetti and frops for family holidays and knitting afghans for the grandchildren. She was a kind and generous person, who would give her love and time to her family and friends. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Tri Town Chamber of Commerce, Tri Town Trailblazers and the Eskimo Club. She was a communicant of St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls.
Surviving Grace is one daughter, Roseanna Felix of Winthrop, her daughter in law, Julie Best of Brasher Falls, eight grandchildren; Christopher Felix, Jason Felix, Wade Felix, Shaun Felix, Lisa St. Pierre, Jeremy Best, Matthew Best, and Marcy (Best) Lawrence, 16 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd, her son Michael L. Best, her son in law, Wayne G. Felix, two brothers, Paul Rufa and Frank Rufa and her sister, Anna Thompson.
Visitation will be held Thursday at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. Grace's Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 10 am at St. Patrick Church.
