Brasher Falls- Ms. Kathleen T. "Katie" Collins, 80, passed away peacefully Monday February 13, 2017 at the University Of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, VT. Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Katie was born in Massena on May 20, 1936 to the late Charles P. and Anna M. (Hammill) Collins. She was raised and educated locally graduating from St. Joseph's Academy in Brasher Falls. She furthered her education at Central City Business Institute in Syracuse, graduating in 1954.
For over 30 years Kathleen was a secretary for Alcoa in Massena. After retirement, in 1987 she became Brasher Town Clerk, serving her community for 10 years. She was a member of the Alcoa 25 Year Club and the Retired Town Clerks Association.
Always up for an adventure and never one for slowing down, after her second retirement Katie continued to help others and serve her community. She volunteered for and was active in numerous organizations in the area. She was a member of the Tri-Town Chamber of Commerce, Tri- Town Senior Citizens, Brasher Falls K of C Auxiliary, American Legion Post #514 Auxiliary, Norfolk Fort Nightly Club, Red Hat Classy Lassys of Brasher Falls, and a supporter of the Democratic Committee.
Faith was a cornerstone in Kathleen's life. She was a parishioner of St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls and an active member of the Altar Rosary Society where she held various positions over the years.
Those who knew and loved Katie would describe her as a "people person", who was appreciative and proud of her friends and family. She had a great sense of humor; was willing to share her wisdom, advice and opinion, and always greeted you with her gentle smile. Her kindness and community spirit will be missed.
She is survived by her sister, Eileen Gibbons of Phoenix NY; a nephew, Christopher (Joanne) Young; 5 nieces: Jan Stankivitz, Beth (Donald) Schmitt, Veronica Wilson, Karen Young, and Marie Gibbons, many cousins, including Jane (Rance) Benton and Caroline (George) Dodge of Brasher Falls who provided a constant support in Katie's life.
She was predeceased by a brother and 2 sisters: Charles M. Collins, Rita Collins, and Jane Young.
Visitation will be Friday from 4-7pm at the funeral home. Kathleen's Mass of Christian Burial and Funeral Service will be celebrated Saturday at 9am at St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls. Burial will take place at the parish cemetery in the spring.
