Douglas L. Belt

January 1, 1949 — July 8, 2018

STOCKHOLM – Douglas L. Belt, 68, from Stockholm, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday July 8, 2018, surrounded by his family at Upstate Medical Center.

Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop where calling hours will be held on Friday, July 13th from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. His Funeral and Remembrance Service will be Saturday July 14th at 11:00 AM. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Sanfordville Cemetery.

Doug was born on October 8th, 1949 in Brockport, NY to the late Walter “Jack” Belt and Mildred “Millie” Mercer. Doug graduated from Brockport high school and later attended SUNY Oswego where he graduated 2nd in his class in 1976. After high school, Doug joined the Air Force and served our country proudly overseas during the Vietnam War. His skills as an airplane mechanic brought him to many countries, including England and Libya, and he was honorably discharged in 1972.

In 1980, Doug met the love of his life Lorre. They married in 1982 and in 1984 they gave birth to their only child, Seth.

Doug retired in 2009 from St. Regis Falls Central School. Prior to that he taught in the Building Trades program at BOCES with his good friend Bruce McDonald. Teaching brought great joy to his life, and the effect he had on his students is still apparent today.

Most importantly, Doug was a kind, compassionate person. He was a free spirit, and he would continually go out of his way to help others. There wasn’t a person that he met who’s life he did not touch in some way. Doug’s passion to help others was what defined his life and he will forever be remembered by the unique memories and stories that every person he met has of him.

Doug enjoyed woodworking, muscle cars and most importantly being outdoors. You would often find him sitting outside watching the wildlife on his property, or sitting down by the river getting in touch with nature. He loved to garden and spent much of his time tending to his plants. He deeply loved his family, his grandson Parker and he loved to create memories with his friends.

Doug is predeceased by his wife, Lorraine, and his parents Millie and Jack. He is survived by his son Seth, Elizabeth (Hicken) Belt and their son Parker Douglas. He is also survived by his three brothers Denny (Nance), Dana (Karen) and Dwayne (Geri).

Flowers are respectfully declined. Memorial contributions can be made to Tri-Town Recreation or Tri-Town Rescue Squad.
