Susan E. Irwin

January 1, 1943 — September 30, 2018

North Lawrence – Mrs. Susan E. Irwin, 75, passed away peacefully, Sunday, September 30, 2018 at Massena Memorial Hospital with her family at her side.  Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home.

Susan was born on March 21, 1943 in Brooklyn, daughter of the late Thomas P. and Viola E. (Doutre) Ryan.  She graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in Brasher Falls.  On September 29, 1962, she married Warren N. (Sonny) Irwin, Sr. at St. Patrick’s Church in Brasher Falls. They shared 56 years of a faithful union where their first and foremost concern was their family.

She worked for SUNY @ Potsdam, with PACES as a short order cook; providing nutritious meals to the students and developing many friendships with them.

Sue enjoyed camping, playing solitaire, keeping up her status on FB and watching WWE.  She was a communicant of St Lawrence Church in North Lawrence, growing her faith, giving her strength to adjust to life’s tribulations. Her home had an open-door policy for the neighborhood and always had extra plates available at the table.  As a matriarch, Sue was a wonderful wife and mother, in return, Sonny and the children were very attentive to her needs and desires until the very last moment of her life.

Sue is survived by her husband, Sonny, their children; Patricia and Chris DeVito of Watertown, Warren N. (Butch)Irwin, Jr. of Parishville, Wayne P. and Tammy Irwin of Macedon, Viann E. and Russell Ballentine of Greenville, SC, Melissa L. and William Lint of Massena, Nicole A. Villnave of North Lawrence, and Jenny R. and Christopher Herrick of Massena, her siblings; James Ryan of Brasher Falls, Patricia Baggot of Plattsburgh, Nancy Roark and Mary Ashley both of Naples, FL, her grandchildren; Matthew, Amanda, Elizabeth, Autumn, Doug, Nathan, Kersten, Kayla, Morgan, Ethan, Ryan, Adam and Michael, her great grandchildren; Benjamin, Wesley, Eva, Briggs, Brynnley, Avery, Anya, Emma, Annabella, Jack, Matthew, Mia, Madelyn and Aria, her beloved Bella, Leo and Bojangles. Besides her parents, Sue was predeceased by a son-in-law, Douglas Villnave, Sr. on June 19, 2015, and two brothers, John Ryan and Thomas P. Ryan.

Sue’s Mass of Christian Burial and Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, October 15, 2018 at 11 am at St. Lawrence Church in North Lawrence with Rev. Garry Giroux celebrating.
