Winthrop – Robert C. McCarthy, 66, passed away Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Canton Potsdam Hospital.  Following his wishes, there will be no public funeral or calling hours.  Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.

Robert was born on February 23, 1952 in Massena, son of the late Charles J. and Eileen D. (Jackson) McCarthy.  After graduating from St. Lawrence Central School, he went to work at General Motors in Massena.  When GM closed, he went to work for Clark Phippen Trucking in Winthrop and then to Seaway Timber Harvesting in Massena. He married Sylvie Hebert on July 15, 1989 with whom he shared a loving and supportive relationship, helping one another endure life’s circumstances along the way.  Robert was a hardworking man, who found enjoyment in keeping busy. He was able to give of himself even while enduring his physical pain.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvie, two children, Bobbie and Frank Phillips of Madrid and Joshua McCarthy of Winthrop, his siblings, James and Vicki McCarthy of Winthrop, Ronald and Deborah McCarthy, Gary and Cheryl McCarthy of Bedford, IN, Richard and Ethel McCarthy of Winthrop, Patricia and Danny Dibble of Winthrop, Nancy McCarthy of Winthrop and Janet Grill of Watertown, five grandchildren, one great granddaughter, many nieces and nephews.
