Moira- Mr. Gerald C. Gonyea, 93, passed away on Monday June 10, 2019 at his home with his family at his side.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Jerry was born on Monday January 4, 1926 in Malone, son of the late Joseph Gonyea and Anna Perry. He graduated from Franklin Academy in Malone and continued his education at Clarkson University, earning a bachelor’s degree in Engineering. Jerry proudly served his country in the US ARMY serving in WWII.
He was married to Lorraine Shatraw in August of 1945, they had eight children together. Lorraine passed away on June 17, 2003.
On July 1, 2006 Jerry married Dorothy (Mushtare) LaMoy in St. Regis Falls, uniting their hearts and families.
He worked as an electrical engineer at Alcoa, Reynolds, and Clarkson University supervising construction and maintenance. After 28 year of dedication, he retired from Clarkson in 1988. Although he was retired, Jerry stayed committed to his work operating several businesses along the St. Lawrence River.
He was a member of the I EEE, and a generous supporter of the American Red cross for over 50 years.
From childhood he was avid stamp collector and had a passion for building model planes and ships. He enjoyed traveling with his family and his wife, especially out west, to Alaska, Hawaii, the Panama Canal, and Egypt.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his children: Anne Gilbert, Linda Jackson, Gerald Gonyea, Debra (Wayne) Johnson, Susan (Gary) Bertram, Mary Conners, Theresa Ferero; step-children: Larry (Bonnie) Patraw, Gary (Sharron) Patraw, Connie (Terry) Dashno, Donna (Bruce) Patraw, Penny (Peter) Derkevics; and a legacy of 110 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Besides his parents and siblings, Jerry was predeceased by his son Steven Gonyea in infancy, and his stepchildren, Bonnie Garceau, Terry Patraw, and Karen Patraw.
Calling hours will be on Thursday from 5 to 7 PM at Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Jerry’s Funeral Service will be celebrated Friday June 14 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Potsdam.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Moira Rescue Squad or to the American Red Cross.
